Once I Go To The Chiropractor... Do I Have To Go Forever?
One of the common objections to chiropractic goes something like this:
"I don't need a chiropractor because I don't have back problems... besides, I heard that once I go to a chiropractor, I have to go for the rest of my life."
There are two issues to address here:
- Whether or not there are back problems
- Whether or not you have to go for the rest of your life
BACK PROBLEMS
When someone tells me that they don't have back problems, usually it means their back doesn't hurt or it doesn't hurt enough to do something about it. But in other areas of their life, they are willing to do something about it even if they don't have problems.
For instance, consider someone who goes to the gym even though they don't have muscle problems. They choose to go because they want to make their muscles stronger or at least prevent them from becoming weaker.
Or what about someone that chooses to eat mostly good organic foods even though they don't have a diet problem? They do so to supposedly stay healthy or at least have a better chance at good health.
Or what about someone that goes to the dentist even though they don't have a tooth problem? Again, it's a choice to take care of what they have.
It is the same thing when it comes to chiropractic. You don't have to have pain to go to a chiropractor. Many go to the chiropractor just to improve or maintain their optimal spinal health. For many, a better functioning spine translates to better performance. That is why so many athletes get chiropractic treamtments prior to competitions.
ARE YOU SHRINKING?
Almost everyone shrinks as they get older. But have you noticed that some shrink more than others? What do you think the primary reason is that people shrink? Would you have any difficulty accepting that it is dependent on the health of the spine?
You see, a healthy spine stays mobile and well lubricated; this keeps the disks healthy and tall. But when the spine is stiff and not functioning properly, the disks dry out, deteriorate, and compress or shrink. When the disks shrink the person gets shorter.
Lots of people supposedly don't have back problems. But lots of people still do shrink. Some people go to the chiropractor to merely help their spines function better. Preventing shrinking is a sort of fringe benefit.
DO I HAVE TO GO TO THE CHIROPRACTOR FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE?
If anyone has ever told you that once you go to the chiropractor you have to go for the rest of your life let me set the record straight: THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE! Not only do you not have to go for the rest of your life, but you don't have to exercise for the rest of your life, you don't have to eat well for the rest of your life, and you don't have to go to the dentist for the rest of your life. The reason many people choose to go to the chiropractor for the rest of their life is that they realize how much better off they are under chiropractic care. Living well and feeling healthy can be quite addicting; just like eating well and exercising... and... yes, even going to the dentist.
Going to the chiropractor is really about improving or maintaining the health of your spine. There are other ways to improve the health of your spine including stretching, rangeof motion exercises, massage therapy, decompression, traction, whole body vibration, and more. So going to the chiropractor for the rest of your life isn't even necessary to maintain a healthy spine. But going sure does make it a lot easier to get a stiff spine functioning better quickly.
